Bread in a jar: pantry mix

Homemade bread is one of those things that sounds more time consuming than it really is. The project isn’t difficult...it’s the prep and cleanup that tend to stop people before they start. Pulling out flour, measuring several ingredients, and then cleaning the kitchen afterward can feel like a project.
That’s exactly why I love keeping dry bread mixes made ahead and stored on the shelf.
When everything is pre-measured and mixed in a jar, making bread becomes incredibly simple. You just dump the mix into a bowl, add water, and continue in the steps you normally would. No flour clouds, no extra measuring cups, and no mess spread across the counter.
Simple Ingredients, No Fillers
Making your own dry bread mix also means full control over the ingredients. There are no fillers, no preservatives, and no unnecessary additives, just basic pantry staples you already trust. It’s real food, prepared in a way that actually supports everyday life instead of complicating it.
This approach works especially well for families who value homemade food but still need practical systems that save time.
One Mess, Multiple Loaves
It took me about 20 minutes to assemble five jars of dry bread mix, and I baked one of them the same afternoon. That meant flour came out once, the kitchen was cleaned once, and after that I had several loaves’ worth of bread ready to go! Whenever the mood for fresh baked bread lofting thru the house, hits me.
Once the prep is done, bread making becomes a low-effort task perfect for busy days when you still want something homemade.
A True Pantry Mix
It’s a reliable pantry mix that keeps well, but it’s used so regularly it rarely stays on the shelf for long... Whether you’re simplifying weeknight cooking or building a more resilient pantry, bread mixes in a jar remove the biggest barrier to homemade bread: the hassle.
Sometimes the key to eating well isn’t doing more—it’s setting things up ahead of time.
Recipe Card: Basic Bread Mix in a Jar
A simple, no-fuss dry mix that makes homemade bread quick and mess-free when you’re ready to bake.
Dry Mix Ingredients
1½ teaspoons salt
4 cups bread flour or all-purpose flour
1 package active dry yeast (2¼ teaspoons)
1½ tablespoons sugar
1½ tablespoons powdered butter
Dry Mix Instructions: Layer all dry ingredients in a quart-size jar or airtight container. I also vacuum seal after. (To know the length of storage, it would be the expiration date of your butter powder.) Label and store in a dark, dry place.
Directions to make
1 jar dry bread mix
1 1/2 cups warm water
Pour the dry mix into a large bowl.
Add warm water and stir until a dough forms.
Knead until smooth and elastic, about 8–10 minutes.
Cover and let rise in a warm spot, until doubled, about 1 hour.
Shape, place in a greased loaf pan, and let rise again 30–45 minutes.
Bake at 350°F for 30–35 minutes, until golden brown.
*When it is done, take it out of the oven and lightly coat the top of the loaf with butter. This softens the crust as it cools.
